Georgia condemns installation of fences on border with Abkhazia

According to the Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), an installation of fences along the border with Abkhazia impedes the peace process and helps isolate the population. The MFA for Georgia has urged Russia to "stop aggressive steps against Georgia."

In the period of August 9-11, fences were installed in the territory of the Khurcha and Shamgon villages in the Zugdidi municipality, reported the Georgian MFA.

"On August 9-11, the segment ... with a length of 800-900 meters was surrounded by barbed wire," reported the Georgian MFA as quoted by the "News-Georgia".

The Georgian MFA has treated those actions as a "part of the policy to isolate the population of Abkhazia."

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs urges Russia ... to respect the principles of international law and respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia," the note states.

The Tbilisi authorities have also called on the international community to assess the recent developments at the border.

The installation of fences on the Khurcha-Nabakevi section directly threatens security, stated the Georgian State Security Service (SSS).

The question is about 2 hectares of land, cultivated by local residents for years, the "Georgia-Online" reports with reference to Badri Khundjgurua, an attorney to the Khurcha village.
