"Novaya Gazeta" proves extrajudicial executions in Chechnya

The newspaper "Novaya Gazeta" has got copies of the photo tables from the Chechen Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) with the data on detention of people who allegedly fell victim to extrajudicial execution. According to the "Novaya Gazeta", 14 of the detainees were killed.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on July 9, the "Novaya Gazeta" reported that at night on January 26, in Chechnya, at least 27 people were executed. Earlier, they were detained in connection with the attack on policemen in Grozny on December 17, 2016. Djambulat Umarov, Chechen Minister for National Policy, External Relations, Press, and Information, has called the information a lie.

On December 17, 2016, in Grozny, militants attacked policemen, and then a large-scale special operation was carried out which resulted in killing of seven militants.

Today, on its website, the "Novaya Gazeta" has published the documents confirming that the people mentioned in the material about an extrajudicial execution in Grozny were actually detained by the police in Chechnya.

The "Novaya Gazeta" has published the photocopies of the photo tables, which, according to the newspaper, were compiled by Chechen policemen. The documents mention the data of the detained residents of Chechnya with their photos.

Some photos show obvious signs of use of physical violence, and others show people handcuffed to heating radiators or gym wall bars. 47 of the people mentioned in the above table were brought to criminal liability. One person was brought to the Chechen MIA's Centre for Combating Extremism (CCE) and his fate is unknown. 5 persons were released. According to the "Novaya Gazeta", the remaining 14 people mentioned in the above table were shot and killed.
