In Dagestan, protesters disrupt introduction of head of Nogai District

In the village of Terekli-Mekteb, participants of the rally broke into a building of the administration for the Nogai District of Dagestan during a meeting in which Baimagomed Yarlykapov was introduced as an acting head of the Nogai District.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on June 30, in the village of Terekli-Mekteb, more than 50 people came to a picket against the delay in the election of the head of the Nogai District and against the authorities' interference in the above elections. A day earlier, more than 200 local residents gathered in the building of the Nogai District administration and voiced the similar demands.

Today, about 500 protesters gathered in the street in front of the Nogai District administration building, including deputies of the Nogai District Assembly and councils of villages.

"Dagestani officials appoint top-ranking officials, although according to the charter, such appointments are illegal without approval by district council deputies," stated Rustam Adilgereev, a deputy from the village of Kunbatar.

He has added that over the past 15 years, the Nogai District was put in a distress situation, and the number of the most acute problems includes "arbitrariness in land issues, corruption, impoverishment, and migration of the population."

Earlier, the press service of the Dagestani leader has rejected the accusations voiced by activists.
