Zhalaudi Geriev's complaint filed to ECtHR

The defence of Zhalaudi Geriev, a "Caucasian Knot" correspondent, accused of drug trafficking, filed a complaint to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR). Zhalaudi Geriev says that the charge has been fabricated. Earlier, human rights organizations have recognized him as a political prisoner.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on April 5, 2017, the Presidium of the Chechen Supreme Court (SC) upheld the verdict to Zhalaudi Geriev, who on September 5, 2016, was sentenced by the Shali District Court to three years of imprisonment on the charge of possession of marijuana.

Zhalaudi Geriev was born in the village of Kurchaloi in the Shali District of Chechnya. He graduated from the Faculty of History of the Chechen State University (ChSU). The journalist is nominated for the "Prize for Freedom of Expression 2017".

According to the Zhalaudi Geriev's advocate, during the consideration of the journalist's case, the preliminary investigation bodies, supervisory agencies and courts violated the norms of the European Convention on Human Rights.

"We assume violation of the Zhalaudi Geriev's rights provided by Article 3, 6, 10 of the European Convention: the inadmissibility of cruel inhuman treatment and torture, the right to a fair trial and minimum guarantees of the defendant's rights at trial, as well as violation of the right to freedom of expression. We have filed a complaint to the ECtHR," advocate Neodesha Yermolaeva told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
