Residents of Chechnya criticize renaming of "Terek" FC

Some residents of Chechnya treat the change of the name for the "Terek" FC (Football Club) to "Akhmat" as a conjuncture decision. They believe there are already enough objects in the republic named after Akhmat Kadyrov.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on June 6, Akhmed Aidamirov, the general director of the "Terek" FC, announced that the board of the FC directors agreed with the proposal to rename "Terek" to "Akhmat" in honour of Akhmat Kadyrov, the former leader of the republic and the father of Ramzan Kadyrov. Akhmed Aidamirov has explained the decision by numerous requests from football fans. However, in social networks, fans opposed the decision on renaming.

In a video published in YouTube on June 6, Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov has reminded the audience that earlier, the "Terek" FC bore the names of "Neftyanik" and "Dynamo". He has suggested that the football fans "are not aware of the history" of the FC.

Ramzan Kadyrov has also asked the opponents of the FC's renaming to tell him the numbers of their mobile phones and expressed his willingness to hold an explanatory conversation.

"It is quite obvious to me that subordinates of Ramzan Kadyrov decided to rename the 'Terek' FC to flatter him. In the republic, there are the 'Akhmat' Fight Club, the 'Akhmat' mosque, and the sports complex named after Akhmat Kadyrov. The 'Akhmat Tower' skyscraper is under construction, and there are streets named after Akhmat Kadyrov in all towns and villages," said Imran, an FC fan.
