NATO PA calls on Russia to renounce recognition of independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia

In its declaration, the Parliamentary Assembly (PA) of NATO has called on the Russian Federation to withdraw troops from Abkhazia and South Ossetia, respect the territorial integrity of Georgia and respond to its unilateral commitment of non-use of force.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in the period of May 26-29, Tbilisi hosted a session of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly. Mikhail Djanelidze, Georgian Minister of Foreign Affairs, has claimed no threat to Russia in connection with the Georgia's integration with NATO.

In its declaration, NATO welcomes the Georgia's policy of de-escalating tension with the Russian Federation.

In August 2008, Russia recognized independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Meanwhile, Georgia treats them as its occupied territories.

The NATO's declaration also notes that NATO welcomes the dialogue between Georgia and the Alliance.

In his turn, Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili has expressed his confidence that the country will become a member of NATO.

Georgia is actively seeking to integrate into NATO. For at least 25 year, the rapprochement with the Alliance is one of the priorities of the country's foreign policy.
