Chechen woman convicted for attempting to leave for Syria

The Nadterechny District Court has sentenced Khava Umieva to 5.5 in prison. Her punishment is postponed until 2029, since she is rearing a small child.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that a criminal case against Khava Umieva was initiated on January 10, 2017. According to investigators, she tried to go to Syria to join militants there.

According to the Chechen Prosecutor's Office, in recent years, more than 600 local residents have left Chechnya for Syria. According to the related facts, 463 criminal cases were initiated; and over 340 persons were put on the international wanted list.

According to the prosecution, Khava Umieva, a resident of the Nadterechny district of Chechnya, tried to leave for Syria in late 2016 to join the terrorist organization "Islamic State" (IS), banned in Russia, but was detained.

The court sentenced Umieva to 5.5 years of imprisonment with a further one-year-long freedom restraint, and postponed her real placement to jail until February 7, 2029, until her youngest child turns 14.
