Residents of Karachay-Cherkessia hold rally to mark Revival Day of Karachay People
In Karachaevsk, about 5000 people attended the rally dedicated to the 60th anniversary of the return of the Karachay people from deportation.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on May 3, Karachay-Cherkessia declared a non-working holiday in connection with the 60th anniversary of the mass return of the Karachay people from deportation.
The deportation of Karachay people to Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan was started on November 2, 1943. As a result of the deportation, 69,267 people (15,980 families), including 36,670 children, were sent to exile.
Ismail-Khadji Berdiev, the chairman of the Coordination Centre of Muslims of Northern Caucasus, Mufti of Karachay-Cherkessia, and Archpriest Evgeny Subtelny, Dean of the Southern, Karachay-Circassian church district, performed a prayer for the people deceased during the deportation.
The Karachay people "have withstood all the hard trials due to their diligence and perseverance," emphasized Mukhadin Shenkao, the chairman of the Interethnic Council of Karachay-Cherkessian NGOs.
"Over the past 60 years, the Karachay people have made great strides in all areas of the national economy and in science, medicine, and sports," said Mukhadin Shenkao.
Karachay-Cherkessian leader Rashid Temrezov has congratulated the participants of the rally on the occasion of the Revival Day of Karachay People.
The participants of the rally laid flowers to the Memorial to victims of the repressions of the Karachay people.
