Defence states impossibility of activist Amirov’s treatment in Baku SIZO

Doctors have diagnosed new diseases in Faig Amirov, the financial director of the “Azadlyg” newspaper, a figurant in the case of supporters of the preacher Fethullah Gülen. In the conditions of the SIZO (pre-trial prison), he cannot receive the necessary dietary food, said his advocate Fakhraddin Mekhtiev.

Faig Amirov, the assistant to the Chairman of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA) was detained on August 20, 2016, on suspicion of inciting religious hatred. According to investigators, books, associated with the Turkish preacher Fethullah Gulen, were found in his home.

On April 13, Faig Amirov was examined by doctors of the medical unit of SIZO-1 located in the settlement of Kurdakhany in Baku. "Apart from his old stomach disease, Faig was diagnosed problems with his liver and gall bladder," Mr Mekhtiev, who visited his client on April 14, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

According to his story, the main problem with Amirov's diseases is the impossibility of providing him with the necessary dietary nutrition in the prison hospital or SIZO.

In order to apply for a change in the freedom restraint measure, the conclusion of prison doctors is not enough, the advocate said. "A forensic medical examination should be appointed; we’ve several times petitioned about it to investigators and the court, but in vain. The preliminary investigation is nearing its end. As soon as the case goes to court, at the preparatory session we’ll first again apply for a change of the freedom restraint measure," said Fakhraddin Mekhtiev.
