Abkhazian veterans oppose Ankvab’s participation in elections

Today, in the Gumista camping area, a rally of veterans of the 1992-1993 Patriotic War II of the Abkhaz people took place; the rally was about 200 strong.

The rally has called on Alexander Ankvab to refuse to participate in the parliamentary elections; and on the Abkhaz authorities – to resume the inquiry of the criminal case initiated against the former president, who was accused of transferring weapons to the Georgian party during the 1992-1993 war.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that during the 1992-1993 Georgian-Abkhazian war, fights took place in the area of the Gumista River; unidentified remains of some of the fighters were found there many years later. During the war, Alexander Ankvab was the Interior Minister of Abkhazia. Now, he is one of the candidates for Abkhazia MPs; the elections are scheduled for March 12.

"We ask Ankvab not to run for the Parliament and understand what this would mean for the society. His presence will bring nothing good to Abkhazia and lead to another confrontation and the impact of external forces on the country's leadership," said Omar Sanguliya, one of the organizers of the rally, the commander of the first company of the First International Battalion.
