Court leaves Faig Amirov in custody

Today, the Baku Court of Appeal (CoA) has rejected the appeal against the refusal of the district court to transfer Faig Amirov, Financial Director of the "Azadlyg" (Freedom) newspaper, under house arrest.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported the deterioration of Amirov's health condition, which was announced by his advocate Fakhraddin Mekhtiev, who visited his client in SIZO (pre-trial prison) on January 23. On February 8, the Nasimi District Court of Baku rejected Amirov’s petition to change his freedom restraint for house arrest for health reasons.

Faig Amirov, the assistant to the Chairman of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA) was detained on August 20, 2016, on suspicion of inciting religious hatred. According to investigators, books, associated with the Turkish preacher Fethullah Gulen, were found in his home.

Today, the Baku CoA has rejected the appeal against the district court's refusal to release Faig Amirov from custody, his advocate Agil Laidjev told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

"We had hoped that, based on the order of President of Azerbaijan on humanization of punishments, which provides for, inter alia, the restriction of the practice of pre-trial arrests, our complaint would be satisfied, but it did not happen," Mr Laidjev said.
