Georgian authorities call on Giorgi Lukava's wife to stop hunger strike

Ketevan Tsikhelashvili, State Minister for Reconciliation and Civil Equality, has addressed the wife of Giorgi Lukava with a request to stop the protest action.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on February 8, the spouse of Giorgi Lukava, sentenced by the Supreme Court (SC) of Abkhazia for his involvement in the Georgian armed grouping "Forest Brothers", started a protest action. The woman demanded from the Georgian authorities to assist in releasing her husband. Giorgi Lukava is serving his sentence in the prison of Dranda.

On September 25, 2013, the Supreme Court of Abkhazia recognized Giorgi Lukava as one of the leaders of the Georgian armed grouping "Forest Brothers" and sentenced him to 20 years of imprisonment in a high-security penal colony and a fine of 225,000 roubles.

According to Ketevan Tsikhelashvili, she met Lali Basariya, the spouse of Giorgi Lukava, and asked her to stop the hunger strike. The Minister has emphasized that "even without any protest actions, the state does as much as possible in efforts to secure the release of Giorgi Lukava," the "Echo of the Caucasus" reports.

Until present, no information about the Lali Basariya's response to the request voiced by Ketevan Tsikhelashvili has been available.
