Relatives of detained resident of Ingushetia cannot locate him

Today, Mikail Kartoev, a resident of Malgobek, was detained by power agents and taken away to some unknown place, the Human Rights Centre (HRC) "Memorial" has reported; Mukharbek Kartoev, the detainee’s father, has appealed to the HRC for help.

According to the father, in the morning their house was approached by some 50 armed men in masks. "They didn’t introduce themselves and didn’t show their IDs... They read out a resolution about conducting a search; but failed to show the document to the Kartoevs," says the report of the HRC "Memorial".

According to Mukharbek Kartoev, Mikail’s wife "saw power agents putting something into his pocket," and after he found the object in his pocket, "they handcuffed him and took out a grenade."

After the search, they put the detainee into a car without number plates and drove away.

According to the HRC "Memorial", in 2009, Mikail Kartoev for three months was a member of the armed underground, but then, he voluntarily surrendered to the police, after which he was convicted for his participation in an illegal armed formation (IAF) and sentenced to conditional imprisonment. His punishment expired back on October 16, 2012.

Mukharbek Kartoev fears that they may "apply illegal interrogation methods" to his son and initiate a criminal case against him.
