Tambov Court refuses to mitigate conditions of detention for Igor Stenin

The Tambov Regional Court has upheld the decision to transfer from a colony-settlement to a penal colony Igor Stenin, the leader of the movement "Russians of Astrakhan", who is serving his sentence in the Tambov Region.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on September 9, 2016, Igor Stenin arrived in the colony No. 10 in Astrakhan; however, on October 13, 2016, he was transferred to the SIZO (pre-trial prison) of the city of Narimanov. Then, Igor Stenin was unexpectedly sent to the colony-settlement No. 2 in the Tambov Region. On November 28, 2016, the Kirsanov District Court of the Tambov Region pronounced the decision on the placement of Igor Stenin to a common-security penal colony.

Igor Stenin was sentenced to two years of imprisonment for reposting in a social network of an article about the war in Ukraine. The defence claimed the comment was posted by another user under the message written by Igor Stenin.

According to advocate Alexander Strebkov, the Court "ignored the position of the defence and did not take into account the arguments presented in the appeal." In its turn, the Court noted that Igor Stenin did not appeal against the punishment.

Igor Stenin himself has claimed that immediately after his transfer to the Tambov Region, he "faced biased attitude." "For example, out of 21 days spent in the colony-settlement, I spent 17 days at a ShiZO (punishment cell) and two other days at quarantine, where I got no reprimands," said Igor Stenin.

The advocate has added that the Igor Stenin's complaint against the verdict pronounced by the Soviet District Court of Astrakhan on May 16, 2016, was sent to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR).
