Azeri journalist Sadygov sentenced to 2.5 years in prison

Today, the Jalilabad District Court of Azerbaijan has finalized the trial of journalist Afgan Sadygov, accused of hooliganism. The defence intends to appeal against the verdict. According to the advocate, the journalist is prosecuted for his publications.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Afgan Sadygov, the founder and editor of the website "Azel.tv", is charged with assaulting a woman. His relatives treat his prosecution as a revenge for his criticism of the authorities of the Jalilabad District.

According to Elchin Sadygov, Afgan's advocate, "a provocation was staged against Afgan for his criticism of the region's problems."

"Afgan was summoned to the district administration, allegedly, for a talk; and when he was leaving the office of the head of the administration, they staged his attack on the woman-complainant," said the advocate.

He has added that all the four witnesses are employees of the district administration.
