On December 26, 2016-January 1, 2017, 10 persons fell victim to armed conflict in Northern Caucasus

During the week of December 26, 2016-January 1, 2017, at least 10 persons fell victim to the armed conflict in Northern Caucasus. Of them, six were killed, and four others were wounded. These are the results of the calculations run by the "Caucasian Knot" based on its own materials and information from other open sources.

The death toll includes one law enforcer and five suspected members of illegal armed formations (IAFs), all of them in Dagestan.

Attacks on law enforcers

According to updated information, in the course of an armed clash which occurred on December 25, 2016, inMakhachkala, apart from two killed policemen, reported earlier, another policeman was wounded. The relevant information was reported on December 26.

At about 10:00 p.m. Moscow time of December 29, in Khasavyurt, unidentified people, travelling in a VAZ-2107 car, shelled a police squad. Two militants were killed by return fire. In the course of a shootout, a policeman died from gunshot wounds. Suspected militants have been preliminary identified as Eldar Akamov and Islam Malachev. According to the preliminary information of the law enforcement authorities, the killed militants were members of the "Khasavyurt" militant grouping, and earlier, one of them had been a member of the "Kizilyurt" militant grouping and was suspected of involvement in an attack on the Kizilyurt police checkpoint.

Special and counterterrorist operations

At about 12:00 a.m. Moscow time of December 30, inLenin Street in Kaspiysk, law enforcers tried to detain a suspected member of an IAF. The suspect opened fire on the law enforcers. A shootout occurred, as a result of which the suspect was killed. No law enforcer suffered in the armed clash.

At 6:00 p.m. Moscow time of December 30, in the territory of the Shamil District in Dagestan, the counterterrorist operation (CTO) legal regime, introduced on November 11, was lifted.

In the evening of December 31, in the village of Yamansu of the Novolak District of Dagestan, law enforcers cordoned off a house with suspected militants inside it. During the special operation, two militants were killed and three law enforcers were wounded. At 2:15 a.m. Moscow time of January 1, the CTO legal regime was introduced within a part of the territory of the Novolak District, where two suspected militants had been killed. The killed militants were identified as Anvar Gadjiev and Magomed Sultanov, members of the Khasavyurt militant grouping. At 5:00 p.m. Moscow time of January 1, the CTO legal regime was lifted.

Detentions

On December 29, in Dagestan, law enforcers detained seven suspected militants of the "Islamic State", a terrorist organization, banned in the Russian Federation. The suspects were plotting terror act in the area of the Dagestani capital. All the detainees were members of the so-called "inactive unit." Till present, the names of the detainees have not been disclosed in the interests of the investigation. The detainees already testify about their contacts and objectives. According to law enforcers, the suspects obtained instructions from Syria. The houses of the detainees were searched, and law enforcers discovered items for manufacture of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and ammunition.

Disappearance

At about 4:00 a.m. of December 28, armed men in masks kidnapped Umakhan Umakhanov, a resident of the village of Kokrek of the Khasavyurt District of Dagestan, born in 1987, and took him away to some unknown destination. His whereabouts is unknown. According to the wife of the kidnapped man, her husband was put on a prevention registration list of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA). An official from the Khasavyurt ROVD (District Interior Division) reports that the number of detainees kept at the ROVD does not include Umakhan Umakhanov.
