Project "The Wall of Sorrow" presented to residents of Kabardino-Balkaria

Today, Nalchik has opened the exhibition of the State Museum of the GULAG's History and the Remembrance Foundation, dedicated to the creation of a monument to victims of political repressions. Residents of Kabardino-Balkaria approved the idea of the monument "The Wall of Sorrow" and stressed the need to honour the memory of repressed peoples, including the Balkars.

In total, the exhibition in Nalchik presents 10 projects for the creation of the monument to victims of political repressions, including the winning project "The Wall of Sorrow" by sculptor Georgy Frangulyan, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports.

"The purpose of the exhibition is to present to people the project of the all-nation memorial to victims of political repressions to be constructed in Moscow," said Mikhail Fedotov, the chairman of the Russian Presidential Council for Civil Society Development and Human Rights.

The mass deportation of Balkars took place on March 8, 1944. At least 37,713 Balkars were sent in 14 echelons to the place of settlement in Central Asia.

According to Boris Zumakulov, Ombudsman in Kabardino-Balkaria, it is a noble idea to create the memorial to victims of political repressions.

The monument "The Wall of Sorrow" will be constructed at the expense of public funds and people's donations, announced Mukhadin Kumakhov, Minister of Culture of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic.

Russia "still has no government programme to honour the memory of victims of repressions," said Yan Rachinsky, a member of the board of the International Society "Memorial".
