Court leaves Varvara Karaulova in custody

Today, the Moscow District Military Court has refused to support the motion filed by an advocate of Alexandra Ivanova (Varvara Karaulova) to change the pre-trial restriction measure against his client.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on September 22, the Court granted the investigators' request to extend until December 13 the detention in custody for Varvara Karaulova (Alexandra Ivanova), a student of the Moscow State University (MSU), accused of an attempt to join a terrorist organization. On October 5, the Court started the trial in the Varvara Karaulova's case and upheld the decision on extension of her detention.

On June 4, 2015, Varvara Karaulova, a student of the Moscow State University (MSU), was detained at the Turkish-Syrian border together with other Russian citizens, including natives of Chechnya and Dagestan, and citizens of Azerbaijan. According to investigators, they were going to join the "Islamic State" (IS), a terrorist organization banned in Russia. After the criminal case had received wide response, Varvara Karaulova changed her name and became Alexandra Ivanova.

Today, the Court has considered the motion filed on October 11 by defender Sergey Badamshin to change the pre-trial restriction measure against his client.

At the beginning of the court session, prosecutor Mikhail Reznichenko immediately protested against the release of Varvara Karaulova from custody. As a result, the judge who chaired the court session dismissed the motion filed by the defence.

"The Court finds that it is impossible to pronounce more lenient pre-trial restriction measure. The motion is dismissed," concluded the judge.
