Participants of Politkovskaya commemoration recollect journalists killed in Russia

The participants of the action in memory of Anna Politkovskaya, the slain journalist of the "Novaya Gazeta", have brought to the monument of Lermontov in Moscow puppets in black bags, symbolizing six journalists assassinated in Russia, namely: Anna Politkovskaya, Mikhail Beketov, Magomed Evloev, Anastasia Baburova, Natalia Estemirova and Gadjimurad Kamalov, and read out fragments of journalists' writings.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Anna Politkovskaya, well-known for her articles about Northern Caucasus, and about Chechnya, in particular, was shot dead in Moscow on October 7, 2006. The Moscow City Court (MCC) sentenced the following figurants in the murder case – the natives of Chechnya Lom-Ali Gaitukaev, Rustam, Ibragim and Jabrail Makhmudov, and a former Moscow policeman Sergey Khadjikurbanov, – to different prison terms.

The commemoration was attended by about 10 activists of the human rights organization "Amnesty International".

Also today, in the course of the action in front of the office of the "Novaya Gazeta", Sergey Sokolov, a deputy editor-in-chief, said that the Politkovskaya's murder case is not closed until the customer is found.

This year, the staff of the "Novaya Gazeta" and Svetlana Gannushkina, the head of the "Civil Assistance" Committee, were nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
