Journalist Faramazoglu's defence reports his torture in detention

Fikret Faramazoglu, the editor-in-chief of the news website "Jam.az" gave his confessions under torture, said his advocate.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Fikret Faramazoglu was detained on June 30; and on July 2 he was accused of extortion and placed in custody. According to law enforcers, he was caught red-handed when receiving money from an owner of a restaurant.

As stated in a conversation with the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent by Elchin Sadygov, who is defending Faramazoglu, the investigation of the journalist's case "is carried out with gross procedural violations."

"After his arrest, Faramazoglu was illegally kept for 34 days in the detention centre of the Main Directorate for Combating Organized Crime (known as the GUBOP) of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA). There he was subjected to torture with the aim to get confessions out of him. His several false teeth were knocked out; he suffers from insomnia and needs medical care. Under torture, he refused from the services of my colleague Nemat Kerimli and from lodging an appeal complaint," said Elchin Sadygov.

Faramazoglu himself rejects the accusations and believes that he is being persecuted for his professional activities, the advocate has added.
