Russian SC to consider case against Nikolai Karpyuk and Stanislav Klykh

Judge of the Supreme Court (SC) of Russia has received the materials in the criminal case against Ukrainian citizens Nikolai Karpyuk and Stanislav Klykh, sentenced for involvement in the first Chechen war on the side of militants.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on June 10, advocate Ilya Novikov reported on filing an appeal with a request to cancel the verdict of the Supreme Court of the Chechen Republic.

According to investigators, on December 31, 1994, Nikolai Karpyuk and Stanislav Klykh, being members of the organization "UNA-UNSO" (banned in Russia), took part in the battles for Grozny and killed at least 30 Russian soldiers. The defendants denied their involvement in the armed conflict and claimed being tortured during the investigation. On May 26, the court sentenced Nikolai Karpyuk to 22.5 years of imprisonment, and Stanislav Klykh to 20 years of imprisonment.

"On the day before yesterday, the case against Nikolai Karpyuk and Stanislav Klykh has finally come to the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation," wrote advocate Ilya Novikov in his Twitter.

The Human Rights Centre (HRC) "Memorial" has recognized Nikolai Karpyuk and Stanislav Klykh political prisoners.
