CoA leaves Fuad Akhmedli in custody

The Baku Court of Appeal (CoA) has rejected the request of the opposition activist Fuad Akhmedli to transfer him from custody to house arrest. His defence intends to appeal against this decision at the European Court of Homan Rights (ECtHR).

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on September 8, the court rejected the petition, lodged by Fuad Akhmedli, a member of the opposition People's Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA). His advocate stated that custody was a threat to Akhmedli's health.

On August 18, Fuad Akhmedli, the head of the Khatai branch of the PFPA's Youth Committee, was detained and charged with distributing of personal information of subscribers of the mobile company, where he worked. After the merger of his case with the case of Faig Amirov, another PFPA activist, investigators suspected Akhmedli of supporting the Islamic preacher Fethullah Gulen, who was accused in Turkey of a putsch attempt.

The advocate Asabali Mustafaev said that the defence will prepare a complaint to the ECtHR.

Earlier, the advocate stated that Akhmedli had serious health problems, in particular, a lung disease; and the respective medical certificates had been duly submitted to the Nasimi District Court of Baku.

Mr Mustafaev has added that he will appeal against the ban imposed by the investigator on phone calls and visits of Akhmedli's relatives to him, since the ban is unjustified.
