Azerbaijan: oppositionist Movsum Samedov stops his hunger strike

The imprisoned Movsum Samedov, the leader of the Islamic Party of Azerbaijan (IPA), has stopped his hunger strike on the 18 day thereof. According to his advocate Yalchin Imanov, Samedov spent 15 days of his action in the dungeon and without any doctor's care.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on August 29 Movsum Samedov, the IPA leader, who is serving his prison sentence, went on hunger strike in protest against the amendments to the Constitution of Azerbaijan, brought to the referendum scheduled for September 26. On August 4, his advocate said that Samedov was placed into the dungeon.

The draft amendments to the Constitution provide for the prolongation of the presidential term from 5 up to 7 years, the introduction of the provision on dissolution of the Parliament, and the establishment in Azerbaijan of the positions of Vice Presidents.

On September 15, at 9:00 a.m., Samedov suspended his hunger strike, as Yalchin Imanov, who visited his client on the same day, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

According to the advocate, on the suspension day, Samedov was released from the dungeon, where he spent 15 days. "Movsum has essentially lost weight; his blood pressure has dropped. He looked pale and listless, and barely moved. He stopped his hunger strike after appeals to him of activists of the democratic public and after the demand of the abolition of the referendum was announced at the rally of the National Council of Democratic Forces (NCDF) on September 11 in Baku," said the advocate.
