Resident of Chechnya convicted for taking part in war in Syria

A 29-year-old resident of the city of Gudermes has been sentenced to two years in colony for taking part in warfare in Syria on the side of a terrorist organization.

According to investigators, from January to November 2013, Turpal-Ali Saipudievich Bukhiev was in Syria as a member of one of the Islamist groupings that fought against governmental troops. Then, he moved to one of European countries, and in 2015 returned to Chechnya, where he was detained, a source from the Investigating Committee informed the "Caucasian Knot".

At sentencing, the court took into account the convict's sincere repentance, as well as the fact that he is rearing young children, the source has added.

A relative ha noted that Bukhiev is really sorry about his participation in the warfare on the side of a terrorist organization.

"He succumbed to Islamists' false propaganda and went to Syria – to protect Muslims as he had thought then; but there he realized the erroneous nature of his views and inconsistency of actions of militants of the "Islamic State" (IS) (banned in Russia by the court as a terrorist organization) with the norms of Islam. Then, he decided to return home. There are many such defrauded guys in Syria," said the relative.
