Referendum on Kadyrov bridge re-initiated in Saint Petersburg

The initiative group, organized by the Saint Petersburg's branch of the "Yabloko" Party, has once again applied to the City Election Commission (CEC).

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on May 30, Saint Petersburg's Toponymic Commission voted by the majority of two votes for naming the anonymous bridge over the Dudergof canal in favour of Akhmat Kadyrov. This decision was criticized by culture figures; and protests were held in the city. On June 8, it became known that Boris Vishnevsky, an MP of the local of the Legislative Assembly, filed an application to the CEC on holding an all-city referendum on the issue of naming the bridge. On June 16, Georgy Poltavchenko, the Governor of Saint Petersburg, signed a decree on naming the bridge after A. Kadyrov.

Boris Vishnevsky has reported today, as quoted by the "Interfax", that the initiative group has submitted a new application for a referendum on naming the bridge.

According to his story, the initiative group held a new meeting, which was attended by 22 people. They expect to ask the townspeople at the referendum, whether the bridge can bear the name "Akhmat Kadyrov Bridge". He also noted that the CEC has 15 days to check the documents of the initiative group. If everything is in order, the application will go to the Legislative Assembly, which will decide whether to put the issue to a referendum. If approved, the initiative group will need to collect 71,000 signatures.
