ECtHR appoints compensation to convict for explosion in Moscow metro

Today, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has appointed a compensation of 1500 euros to Murat Shavaev, finding a violation of his right to fair trial, when the terror act, committed in the Moscow metro in 2004 was investigated.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the explosion in the Moscow metro was committed between the "Avtozavodskaya" and the "Paveletskaya" stations on February 6, 2004. As a result of the explosion, committed by a suicide bomber, 41 people were killed and about 250 injured. On February 2, 2007, the Moscow City Court sentenced three suspects, including Senior Adviser of Justice Murat Shavaev, an ex-employee of the Ministry of Justice, to life imprisonment. Shavaev denies his guilt completely.

Today, the ECtHR has found a violation of Article 6 of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) (the right to a fair trial), which took place at the consideration of the civil claim on collecting compensation from Murat Shavaev within the criminal case of the terror act, Rustam Matsev, a lawyer of the organization "Legal Initiative", told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

The complaint to the ECtHR, filed in 2010 by the "Legal Initiative" on behalf of Shavaev, stated that Shavaev had no access to justice – he had no chance to participate in the consideration of the appeal, although he had asked for it, said the lawyer.
