Oppositional march in Yerevan turns into sit-in picket

Today, supporters of the opposition has staged a march through central Yerevan in support of the capturers of the building of the police patrol-and-guard regiment. The march turned into a sit-in picket at the crossroads of Mashtots Avenue and Tumanyan Street, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports from the venue.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on July 17, supporters of the opposition "Constituent Parliament" seized the building of the regiment of the patrol-and-security police service. One policeman was killed, and three others were wounded. Besides, two oppositionists were injured. Members of the "Constitutive Parliament" demand to release all political prisoners in the country, including their leader Zhirair Sefilyan. The "Heritage" Party and the Front of National Salvation "New Armenia" blamed the authorities for the incident. In Yerevan, the police began to detain supporters of opposition movements.

"As soon as the detainees are released, the sit-in picket will again turn into a march; and we'll return to Freedom Square," said one of the sit-in picketers.

The policemen, who accompanied the march, have assured the activists that all the detainees had already been released.

Today, the National Security Service (NSS) has issued a statement that a criminal case had been initiated against the members of the "Constituent Parliament", in whose support the protesters held their action. The "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was told about it at the NSS.
