SC recognizes legality of investigators' actions in Akhmednabi Akhmednabiyev's case

In Russia, the defence has exhausted all the possibilities to defend the rights of the victim party in the case of the murder of journalist Akhmednabi Akhmednabiyev. This was stated by advocate Tumas Misakyan. According to him, today, the Supreme Court (SC) of Dagestan has upheld the decision to dismiss the complaint about the inaction of the investigators.

Akhmednabi Akhmednabiyev, a correspondent of the "Caucasian Knot" and the deputy editor-in-chief of the "Novoe Delo", was killed in the suburbs of Makhachkala on July 9, 2013. He became the 17th journalist killed in Dagestan during 20 years.

According to Tumas Misakyan, in February, he sent an appeal to the Investigating Department for Dagestan of the Investigating Committee of the Russian Federation (ICRF); however, he did not receive any response.

On June 8, the advocate filed a complaint to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR). The investigation into the murder of Akhmednabi Akhmednabiyev was conducted inefficiently, and the authorities failed to take measures to protect the journalist. This was stated in the complaint prepared by Tumas Misakyan with the support of the Mass Media Rights Defence Centre.
