Bridge named after Akhmat Kadyrov

In Saint Petersburg, activists attach to Kadyrov's bridge a plate with another name

Last night, at the entrances of the bridge, which was named after Akhmat Kadyrov, members of the movement "Solidarity" have secured plates with a different name: the bridge of sniper Idrisov. Thus, the activists expressed their protest against the decision of the City Governor to name the bridge after the first President of Chechnya.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on May 30 the Saint Petersburg’s Toponymic Commission supported the idea of naming the bridge over the Dudergof Canal after Akhmat Kadyrov. The application for a referendum, in which citizens could express their attitude to this idea, was submitted on June 8. However, on June 15 the city governor ruled to make the above naming.

The appeal filed by the movement "Solidarity" in that regard states that the city has its own heroes, whose names are worth to be honoured. And their number includes Abukhadji Idrisov, the Hero of the Soviet Union, who defended Leningrad, being enlisted in the 125th Rifle Division. In April 1944, he was wounded and brought to hospital, and then, together with other Chechens, he was deported to Kazakhstan, from where he managed to return home only in 1957.

"For a long time, the streets and avenues in the Krasnoselsky District are historically called after the names of the warriors who defended our city and country during World War II. One of them was Senior Sergeant Abukhadji Idrisov, a Chechen native. The acts of bravery committed by sniper Abukhadji Idrisov, the Hero of the Soviet Union, were described in newspapers: he destroyed three hundred and fifty Nazis. The bridge on Heroes Avenue, named after Abukhadji Idrisov, will be a tribute of the grateful memory of the Saint Petersburg residents to all compatriots who fought for our lives and freedom," declares the statement of the movement "Solidarity" as quoted by the "MR7.ru" website.
