Advocate reports on violation of rights of Bairam Mamedov and Giyas Ibragimov in SIZO

The advocate of activists Bairam Mamedov and Giyas Ibragimov, arrested in Baku, was searched at the SIZO (pre-trial prison), and his notes made during the meeting with his clients were examined. The defender believes that the SIZO administration violated his right to confidential communication with his clients and the activists' right to defence.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on May 10, Facebook user Giyas Ibragimov and Bairam Mamedov, an activist of the movement "Nida", were detained in Baku on the charge of drug trafficking. According to the movement "Nida", the activists were detained in connection with the appearance of graffiti on the pedestal of the monument to Geidar Aliev in Baku.

Photos of the monument of Geidar Aliev in the park in central Baku with inscriptions on its pedestal were disseminated on May 10 in social networks on the Internet and some online editions. The inscription in the Azerbaijani language read: "Qul bayramınız mübarək!" (Congratulations on the slaves' holiday!). This was wordplay with the phrase "Congratulations on the Day of Flowers!" This day is marked annually on May 10, the birthday of former president Geidar Aliev. On the other side of the pedestal, it was written in English: "Fuck the system!" Later, the inscriptions were erased.

On June 8, Elchin Sadygov visited their clients at the Baku SIZO-1. Before and after his meeting with the clients, the advocate was searched by SIZO staff members. This was told to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent by the advocate himself.

"It was not the inspection related to checking whether I brought any prohibited items. The aim of the search was a direct invasion into the advocate's secret, since this time, while I was leaving the SIZO, they directly examined my notes made by me during the meeting with my clients. Thus, they violated the right of Mamedov and Ibragimov to defence," Elchin Sadygov has stated.
