Khadija Ismayilova released from colony

Today, the Supreme Court (SC) has lifted charges of misappropriation and abuse of office from the journalist Khadija Ismayilova.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Ismayilova has become known for her investigations of corruption in the higher echelons of Azerbaijani state. In 2014, she was detained on charges of incitement to a suicide attempt of her colleague Tural Mustafaev. Later, she faced a number of economic charges. Ismayilova refused to plead guilty. On September 1, 2015, a court in Baku sentenced her to 7.5 years of imprisonment.

Today, the Azerbaijani SC has replaced the real imprisonment for 3.5 years of the conditional term with a probation period of five years. The SC has also ruled to immediately release her from colony.

"Hello to all of you; I'm back at large; thanks for your support. I'm full of strength and energy; I'll continue working as a journalist. Thank you," she said to her supporters at the colony's gate. On the way home, she received phone congratulations from her colleagues and thanked them for their support.
