Activists: Ismayilova's work on translating book in prison is example of struggle for freedom

In prison, Khadija Ismayilova demonstrates the freedom of spirit and provides an example of commitment to democratic ideals. This was stated in Baku at the presentation of the book "Children of the Jacaranda Tree", translated by Ismayilova.

On September 1 the Baku Court of Grave Crimes convicted Ismayilova and sentenced her to 7.5 years in prison. The journalist was found guilty of illegal entrepreneurship, tax evasion, misappropriation, embezzlement and abuse of power. The defence appealed against the sentence. On November 25, the Baku Court of Appeal (BCA) dismissed the complaint of Khadija Ismayilova and upheld the verdict of guilty.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in late February a translation of the novel "Children of the Jacaranda Tree" by the American writer of Iranian origin Sahar Delijani, made by Khadija Ismayilova in prison, was published.

The presentation of the book by Delijani, translated into the Azerbaijani language, took place on March 13 at the office of the Civil Solidarity Party of Azerbaijan. The event was attended by public and political figures, journalists, and civil society activists.

Even in prison Ismayilova is freer than the not arrested part of the Azerbaijani society, Jamil Gasanli, the head of the National Council of Democratic Forces (NCDF), said at the presentation.

"By her free spirit, from the prison, where she continues to be creative, Khadija Ismayilova gives an example of intransigence and selfless struggle for the ideals of freedom," said Gasanli.

Isa Gambar, the head of the National Centre for Strategic Thought, called Ismayilova's work "a bright example of creativity of a free person, who is defending her values even in prison."
