New article added to case on attack on journalists in Ingushetia
Investigators in Ingushetia have added to the case of beating up journalists and rights defenders in the Sunzha District the article about a group armed attack in order to steal property.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on March 9, on the Chechen-Ingush border, a minivan of the Joint Mobile Group (JMG), carrying Russian and foreign journalists and rights defenders, was attacked; nine people were injured. The Sunzha Division of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) began an inquiry under two criminal articles – on hooliganism committed by a group of persons (Part 2, Article 213), and on deliberate destruction of one's property (Article 167). According to lawyers, the attack should be investigated as banditry.
Today, the Ingush MIA has reported in its website that on the fact of the attack on journalists, another criminal case was opened – on an attack with the aim to steal other people's property, committed by a group of persons with the use of weapons (Part 2, Article 162, of the Russian Criminal Code). The penalty under this article provides for up to 10 years in prison.
All the criminal cases opened in relation to the attack, have been united into one single proceeding.
On the day of the attack on the minivan of the JMG, the office of rights defenders in Ingushetia was attacked and plundered. This incident is also investigated by law enforcement bodies of Ingushetia.
