Ismayilova translates a book about struggle for freedom while in prison

The imprisoned journalist Khadija Ismayilova has finished translating a novel about the struggle against the totalitarian regime in Iran into the Azeri language. Her colleagues are trying to put the Ismayilova's translation on sale.

On September 1 the Baku Court of Grave Crimes convicted Ismayilova and sentenced her to 7.5 years in prison. The journalist was found guilty of illegal entrepreneurship, tax evasion, misappropriation, embezzlement and abuse of power. The defence appealed against the sentence. On November 25, the Baku Court of Appeal (BCA) dismissed the complaint of Khadija Ismayilova and upheld the verdict of guilty.

The fact that Khadija Ismayilova has finished translating the book by Sakhar Delizhani, an American writer of Iranian origin, was reported to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent by journalist Shakhveled Chobanoglu, an Ismayilova's colleague. The novel "Children of the Jacaranda Tree", translated by Ismayilova, is being prepared for printing, he said.

The novel is about the struggle against the regime in Iran; its heroes are the people, who occurred to be political prisoners, and their children. The book is being prepared by the Azerbaijani private publishing house "Ganun" (Law) for sale in bookstores of Baku.

Sugar Delizhani has already written a preface to the Azerbaijani version of the novel, an excerpt from which was posted by Chobanoglu in his page on the Facebook. Ms Delizhani has called the translation of the novel the most impressive of all.

"First of all, the book was translated by the person, imprisoned for fighting for freedom; secondly, Khadija has translated the book into my mother tongue," said the writer.
