Sergey Sokolov wins contest in memory of Akhmednabi Ahmednabiyev (+video)

The first place in the contest in honour of Dagestani journalist Akhmednabi Ahmednabiyev was granted to Sergey Sokolov, the deputy editor-in-chief of the "Novaya Gazeta".

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the annual award to journalists writing about the Caucasus was established on October 1, 2014, by the "Caucasian Knot" together with the Russian Union of Journalists in memory of the Dagestani journalist Akhmednabi Ahmednabiyev. The winner of the first contest was Elena Milashina, a correspondent of the "Novaya Gazeta".

Works of 24 journalists were presented to this year's contest. The article by Sergey Sokolov entitled "The Battalion of Ghosts" was recognized as the winner; the article is on the Chechen trace in the murder of Boris Nemtsov.

Three other journalists were awarded with prizes.

On July 9, 2013, Akhmednabi Akhmednabiyev was shot dead in the village of Semender in Dagestan. Staying in one of the "hottest" regions of Northern Caucasus, Akhmednabiyev was writing on acute issues: human rights violations in Dagestan; abuses at regional elections; crimes committed by power agents; and persecutions of religious communities and individual believers.

Let us remind you that the contest will be continued in 2016. Materials can be sent through the communication forms.
