Investigator of Azerbaijani Prosecutor's Office reports on searches in his office and at home

The office and the rented apartment of Rufat Safarov, an investigator of the Zardob District Prosecutor's Office, have been searched. The investigator associates the searches with his letter of resignation as a sign of his disagreement with the policy of the Azerbaijani government.

On December 20, in his interview to the opposition newspaper "Azadlyg", the 34-year-old investigator stated that he was leaving his post and resigning from the law enforcement bodies. Rufat Safarov has explained his act by the breach of justice in the law enforcement system of Azerbaijan.

"I am extremely concerned about the fate of our people. Today, all the corrupt officials and thieves are free, and innocent people are rotting in prisons. Their only fault is that they have voiced the truth," Rufat Safarov has said.

Rufat Safarov has announced his intention to make public in the nearest future the facts about the "deplorable state of the legal system of Azerbaijan".

Late in the evening of December 21, it became known that the office and the rented apartment of Rufat Safarov in the town of Zardob were searched.

"They want to collect a basis for criminal prosecution. Tomorrow (on December 22), I will address Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliev in connection with these acts of lawlessness," Rufat Safarov has stated.
