Khadija Ismayilova sentenced to 7.5 years in prison

Today, the Baku Court of Grave Crimes has sentenced Khadija Ismayilova, a reporter of the "Radio Liberty" in Azerbaijan, to 7.5 years of deprivation of freedom.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Khadija Ismayilova appeared in court on charges of economic crimes and bringing her colleague Tural Mustafaev to a suicide attempt. On August 21, prosecutor Ramazan Khadyev asked the court to sentence Khadija Ismayilova to 9 years of imprisonment.

Today, the court found Ismayilova guilty of illegal entrepreneurship, tax evasion, embezzlement and abuse of office. At the same time, the court acquitted Ismayilova under Article 125 (inciting to suicide) of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan.

The "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was informed about it by Fariz Namazly, Ismayilova's advocate. According to his version, the defence disagrees with the verdict and will appeal against it.

Let us note here that Khadija Ismayilova became known for her journalistic investigations into corruption in the highest echelons of Azerbaijani power. In April 2013, she became one of 10 laureates of the contest "Heroes of the Caucasus-2012", conducted by the "Caucasian Knot".
