South-Ossetian inmates of Gldani Prison stop hunger strike

The life-long convicts from South Ossetia, kept in Gldani Prison, have stopped their hunger strike after receiving a promise from officials of the Georgian presidential administration to bring their cases for consideration of the Parliament.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on January 26, three citizens of South Ossetia – Georgy Zasseev, Georgy Valiev and Iosif Kochiev – started, along with other prisoners of the Georgian Gldani Prison No. 8, an endless hunger strike, demanding revision of their verdicts and objective investigation of their cases. As on February 10, there were 46 hunger-strikers.

The hunger strike of the convicted citizens of South Ossetia in Gldani Prison was stopped in the evening on March 3, said Marina Valieva, the wife of Georgy Valiev.

According to her story, the hunger strike was stopped after the visit to the prison of officials from the Georgian presidential administration and activists of youth organizations.

"Officials from the administration of Georgian President promised to bring the issue of life-long prisoners to the Parliament," Marina Valieva told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent today, noting that this step of the authorities was the reason for the hunger-strikers to stop their protest.
