Chechen authorities announce murder of local underground leader

Musa Zavgaev, known among militants as Emir of the Nadterechny and Naur Districts of Chechnya, and his accomplice were killed in a special operation, the republic’s authorities have reported. Both of them had links with the grouping involved in the attack on Grozny on December 4, 2014, says the Russia’s National Antiterrorist Committee (NAC).

The special operation took place in the outskirts of the village of Mekenskaya, Naur District of Chechnya; and the results thereof were first announced by the head of Chechnya Ramzan Kadyrov. According to his story, “the head of the bandit grouping Musa Zavgaev and his accomplice” were blocked in one of the houses of the village. When offered to surrender, they opened fire and were killed by return fire, said Kadyrov.

He added that Zavgaev was known as one of the most dangerous and violent members of the Chechen armed underground. According to the authorities, since 2000 Zavgaev was involved in killing policemen, the "Interfax" reports.

Both casualties were associated with the grouping "of the leader of the western sector of the bandit underground" named Tagilov, the NAC has reported, adding that during the special operation, "several servicemen of the Interior Troops of the Russia’s MIA" were wounded.

  • Compensation decrease for illegal prosecution violates rights of KBR resident

The court ruling, which awarded Madin Gubzhokov compensation of 30,000 roubles for unlawful criminal prosecution, is incomparable with the moral harm caused by the actions of Azamat Kyaov, a former law enforcer.
