Head of Centre for Protection of Freedom of Conscience treats arrest of theologian Elshan Mustafaoglu in Azerbaijan as misunderstanding

In Azerbaijan, law enforcers detained theologian Elshan Mustafaoglu. According to his relatives, the court has announced the pre-trial restriction measure against the detainee in the form of arrest. The prosecution against the theologian is a misunderstanding, stated Ilgar Ibragimoglu, the head of the Centre for Protection of Freedom of Conscience and Religion.

Elshan Mustafaoglu is being kept at the detention facility of the Ministry of National Security of Azerbaijan.

On December 19, the court announced the decision to arrest Elshan Mustafaoglu for a period of four months. The family members of the theologian found it difficult to say why he was detained, the website "IlslamAzeri.az" reports.

According to unofficial information, Elshan Mustafaoglu is suspected of treason, the "Salamnews" reports.

Elshan Mustafaoglu is a "very decent and honest man," said Ilgar Ibragimoglu. He has suggested that the theologian will be released soon and that his arrest will be explained by a misunderstanding, the "Contact.az" reports.
