Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe demands from Azerbaijani authorities to release Ilgar Mamedov

Azerbaijani authorities shall immediately release of Ilgar Mamedov, the leader of the civil movement "Republican Alternative" (ReAl), said the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on March 17 Ilgar Mamedov was sentenced to seven years in prison on charges of organizing mass riots in the city of Ismayilli on January 23-24, 2013.

In April 2013, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) began communicating, in the special order, on Mamedov's case. In May, violations of his rights under three articles of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) were recognized; and the ECtHR ruled to pay a compensation of 22,000 euros to Mamedov.

However, on August 8, the Government of Azerbaijan appealed to the Grand Chamber of the ECtHR against this decision; and on October 13, the ECtHR refused to accept the Government's appeal for consideration. Thus, as explained by Fuad Agaev, Mamedov's advocate, the ECtHR's decision on Mamedov was finally adopted and should be enforced within three months.

The Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe has also demanded from Azerbaijani authorities to provide full information about the measures taken or planned to prevent initiation of criminal cases without due legal basis, the "Radio Azadlyg" reports referring to the lawyer Fuad Agaev.
