Dagestani SC postpones session on Zarema Bagavutdinova's case

The Supreme Court (SC) of Dagestan will continue, on August 4, its consideration of the appeal complaint against the verdict passed by the Buynaksk City Court against Zarema Bagavutdinova, an activist of the Dagestani Regional Public Organization (DRPO) "Pravozaschita" (Advocacy).

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Bagavutdinova was sentenced on May 21. She was found guilty of recruiting in November 2011 a native of Dagestan Mamma Dalgatov for participation in illegal armed formations (IAFs).

At the court session on July 23, the defence demanded to cancel the verdict and acquit Bagavutdinova. Also, the defence lodged several motions, including one about questioning a witness.

The advocate Ziyavutdin Uvaisov, who was assigned to defend Bagavutdinova by the Human Rights Centre (HRC) "Memorial", said that the session failed because of non-appearance of the witness due to illness. The next session is scheduled for August 4.
