Ten persons made criminally liable in Azerbaijan in connection with disturbances in Ismailly

Ten persons were arrested and made criminally liable in Azerbaijan in connection with disturbances in Ismailly on January 23-24, including two who caused a road accident which resulted in an arson of “Chyrag” hotel. Besides, 52 more people were detained, the Ministry of Interior Affairs and Prosecutor General’s office of Azerbaijan report.

At night of January, 24, disturbances with the participation of about two thousand people took place in Ismailly. According to the police, the disturbances started with a road accident with the participation of an employee of the hotel.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Interior Affairs and Prosecutor General’s office state involvement of the opposition in the disturbances. “On January, 24, Deputy Chairman of “Musavat” party Tofig Yagublu and Co-chairman of the movement “Republican Alternative” Ilgar Mamedov went to Ismailly and called for the population to put up resistance to the police, block the ways to vehicles and commit other actions aimed at violation of social and political stability”, a joint statement of the two offices runs.

On January, 29, Mamedov and Yagublu were interrogated in the Department for grave crimes of Prosecutor General’s office in Baku.

“Musavat” party discussed these interrogations of the representatives of the opposition by the investigators and called these challenges “the authorities’ tendency to keep back the population’s growing discontent and intimidate the activists”.
