Writer Rafiq Tagi attacked in Baku
Late in the evening on November 19, an attack on the writer Rafiq Tagi was committed in Azerbaijani capital. The 61-year-old writer was hospitalized in grave condition.
According to his relatives, Rafiq was knifed in his neck, abdomen and shoulder; he is now in the intensive care unit of the City Clinical Centre.
The "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports that unidentified criminal attacked Tagi, when he got off the bus.
So far, nothing is known about the pretext of the attack. The Baku police have confirmed the attack, but gave no comments.
In November 2006, Rafiq Tagi was arrested for his publication "We and Europe". . The article caused discontent of muslims - on their opinion, Tagi criticized Islamic values. In Baku, they held a protest action, and Iranian mullahs passed a Sharia death sentence to Tagi.
In May 2007, Rafiq Tagi was sentenced to three years in prison on charges of inciting inter-religious hatred. However, in December that year, he was released under the presidential pardon decree.
