A statement of residents of Tavush district about beating them up in a military unit is under investigation in Armenia

Military police of the town of Tavush, Armenia, is investigating an incident in one of the military units of Ijevan during which, according to two residents of Tavush district, the commander of the unit beat them up.

The incident took place yet on December, 31, 2010. On that day, at about 23:50 local time, two residents of the village of Getaovit, Tavush district, were delivered to Ijevan medical center from Ijevan military unit: Taron Engibaryan aged 20 with a severe cerebral trauma and Ashot Ulikhanyan aged 21 with a leg fracture.

The young men said that they had got these injuries in the military unit where they drove in a car to see their friend’s relative. According to them, the commander of the regiment saw them near the checkpoint and ordered them to leave the territory of the unit with swearing and threats. One of the young men answered his abuse and then Karapetyan told his officers to bring several guys and severely beat the young men up.

According to the information from Investigative Service of the Armenian Ministry of Defense, criminal proceedings were started on the incident according to part 3, clause 258 of the Criminal code of Armenia (disorderly behaviour).

Answering the question whether there were persons detained or arrested in connection with the case a representative of Investigative Service said that there were no detained or arrested by the moment, preliminary investigation was in process, "Panorama.am" reported.
